Legally established government entities are eligible for Extended Validation SSL Certificates. Private organizations legally recognized by a filing with an official incorporating agency who also have a registered agent, office or equivalent may receive an Extended Validation SSL Certificate. They must not be listed as “inactive,” “invalid,” “not current” or equivalent. Unincorporated partnerships, associations, sole proprietorships and individuals are currently not eligible for Extended Validation Certificates; however, this limitation will be addressed in the next major revision of the standard.
Authentication Process
To issue an Extended Validation SSL Certificate, thawte requires confirmation of the legal existence of the organization and a signed acknowledgement of agreement on the order from the contact person for the organization. thawte will verify the organization’s registered legal name, registration number, registered address, as well as its physical business address. thawte will also verify the applicant organization’s right to use the Domain Name and that the application organization has authorized the issuance of an Extended Validation Certificate.
